The inspection sequence

Twelve chapters reveal more than a polished walkaround.

01Can the video prove the identity of the exact machine?

Begin with one continuous view of the full machine, model plate, serial number, engine plate, pumps, valves, motors and controller labels. Compare those details with the quotation and parts documents. Keep the serial visible again during packing so the demonstration cannot quietly switch to another unit.

02What should the walkaround show before starting?

Inspect welds, pins, bushings, cylinders, hoses, wiring, tracks or tyres, guards, restraints, interlocks, fluid levels and visible leaks. Ask for close views of hose bends, exhaust proximity, articulation joints and areas hidden behind removable panels.

03How do I know the engine is genuinely cold?

Ask the presenter to show the engine or coolant area with a suitable temperature reading before starting and keep the recording continuous. A cold start can reveal battery, glow, fuel, smoke, warning-light and idle behaviour that disappears after the machine has been warmed off camera.

04Which controls and safety systems should be demonstrated?

Show the emergency stop, parking brake, operator-presence system, restraints, warning lights, horn, travel controls and attachment lock. Missing, bypassed or non-functioning safety systems are stop conditions, not cosmetic issues.

05What should travel, steering and braking look like?

Run forward, reverse and turns at controlled speed on level ground, then use representative firm terrain within the manufacturer’s limits. Watch for jerky response, track or tyre interference, unusual noise, drift, weak braking and controls that prevent normal simultaneous functions.

06How should the real work cycle be tested?

Use the intended bucket or attachment and representative material. An excavator should dig and place; a skid steer should enter, lift, travel and dump; a dumper should carry and tip; a loader should lift and articulate; a roller should follow the correct material and vibration procedure.

07How should capacity be shown without creating a dangerous test?

Use the exact load chart or rated operating data, approved attachments and a known load within the permitted limits. Record reach, height and load centre. One successful overload or improvised counterweight does not demonstrate safe capacity and should not be requested.

08What should the attachment test include?

Show mechanical locking, couplers, electrical controls, auxiliary flow direction, return or case drain, hose routing and the complete motion range. Continue long enough to expose heat or control limitations. A tool that pins on but cannot operate correctly is not compatible.

09Why should the machine operate until fully warm?

Some leaks, cooling problems, slow functions, warning lights and restart issues appear only after sustained work. Record temperatures and warning status where available, then stop and restart the machine while it remains hot.

10What should the post-work inspection reveal?

With the machine safely shut down, inspect new leaks, hose movement, wiring contact, track condition, loose fasteners, fluid foaming or unusual odour. Never touch hot pressurized systems or search for a hydraulic pinhole with a hand.

11Which service points should be opened on camera?

Show access to engine oil, filters, hydraulic fill, air cleaner, fuel-water separator, battery, coolers, grease points and track adjustment. Confirm that panels can be removed and routine service completed without undocumented disassembly.

12How should dimensions, weight and packing be verified?

Measure the operating and packed width, height and length, then show the cargo on a suitable scale. Match crate marks, packing list and serial number. Record lifting points, tie-downs and container preparation before the machine leaves the factory.

What should stop the review

Editing can hide the exact moment that matters.

A cut is not automatically deceptive, but it breaks continuity. Ask for the missing sequence again on a live call or through an independent inspector.

How to interpret behaviour

Look for consistency, not a dramatic single test.

Watch how the machine starts, responds and returns to neutral. Listen for changes as the hydraulics warm. Follow hoses and wiring through the complete motion range. Check whether the operator avoids one direction, function, attachment or load condition.

A one-time lift does not establish rated capacity. A clean machine does not establish service history. Smoke colour, fluid appearance and sound can prompt questions, but diagnosis requires the correct manual, measurements and competent inspection.

Never request an overload to “prove” the machine.

Use known loads inside the exact chart and approved configuration. The goal is to confirm normal operation, not create an unsafe spectacle.

Send the supplier a clear shot list.

Attach the final quotation and purchased attachments so the inspection cannot default to a generic demonstration.

  1. Show the full machine, quotation reference and serial plate in one continuous opening shot.
  2. Show engine, pump, valve, motor and controller plates clearly enough to read.
  3. Demonstrate that the engine is cold, then perform the cold start without a cut.
  4. Test restraints, interlocks, emergency stop, parking brake, warning lights and horn.
  5. Run travel, steering, braking and all normal simultaneous functions.
  6. Use the purchased attachment with representative material within rated limits.
  7. Continue until the machine is fully warm, inspect for leaks, then perform a hot restart.
  8. Open routine service areas and show filters, coolers, battery and grease points.
  9. Measure the machine and packed cargo, then show gross weight on a suitable scale.
  10. Finish with the same serial-numbered machine being prepared and marked for shipment.

Evidence limits

A strong video reduces uncertainty. It does not remove it.

Remote video cannot establish long-term fatigue life, internal contamination, material grade, legal compliance, future parts availability or the condition after shipping. A seller can also stage the environment or choose an unusually well-prepared unit.

Use serial continuity, written specifications, independent inspection, protected payment and post-arrival checks together. Treat owner videos as operational context and seller videos as exact-unit questions—not as universal proof of reliability.
